MC / DJ Ethos

Oi over 'ere
Q: Who are you, where you from, what do you do?
A: My real name is Pete, and I have been working as a DJ, MC and producer in the UK and around the world for 6 years under the name Ethos. I manage Nu Wax City records in Croydon, one of the world's largest Hardcore and Hard Dance vinyl specialists, and I co-own and promote Future Dance events and recordings with DJ Kaos.

Q: How did you choose your DJ / artist name?
A: My name came about by accident really. When I first got into the scene as a kid, it was fashionable to have a "tag", which we used to go round writing on bus shelters and lampposts!! Graffiti for people who can't draw!! I played around with a few different tags and Ethos was one which came up. A couple of years later in a drunken conversation, the name came up again, and as by now I was getting into DJ'ing, I decided to revive the old tag name and have stuck with it ever since. It mean's something to me personally, but probably means nothing to anyone else!!

Q: Got into hardcore when and why?
A: I first started listening to hardcore in around 1992, through listening to some of the London pirate radio stations, which were broadcasting every weekend at the time. Back then I was quite heavily into hip-hop, and for me hardcore was a natural progression, because it had break-beats, rap vocals but coming from the UK, I could relate to it more easily. Living in the city, I guess it had an urban identity that kids could easily relate to.

Q: How many track releases you have under your belt
A: So far, I have 3 releases out on my own label, "Future Dance Recordings" which was launched last year. I also have one out on Next Generation, both sides of which were written for their album. I have also written tracks for FBI, Subsonic Underground and a couple of exclusives for the forthcoming Bonkers album, so I have plenty more yet to come!! Both released and unreleased, I've written about 25 tracks.

Q: What is your future plans for hardcore for the year ahead?
A: My two main priorities at the moment are the Future Dance events and producing more tracks in the studio. Because I've been so busy promoting this year, most of the tracks I've written have been for other labels, and I really need to get back into the studio to do some bits for myself. As far as the events go, we are currently preparing for the 2002 Hardcore Dance awards, which we will be hosting jointly with Vibealite on New Years Eve. We hosted our first joint event, "Futurevibe" at the Sanctuary this summer and the NYE event will be held at Fantasy Island, possible the most unique venue in the world!! The aim of these events is to recognise the contribution of both individuals and collectives who have helped to make hardcore what it is today.

Q: What are your current involvements or projects you are working on?
A: I've just finished two exclusive's for Sharkey's mix on the forthcoming Bonkers album, and will shortly be in the studio again to write for Next Generation and Nu Energy. As I said before, I will be writing again for the FD label before the end of the year, so hopefully should have plenty of new material out and about by Christmas.

Q: What do you think the future hardcore styles will be or evolve into?
A: It's really hard to say. Hardcore needs to remain versatile and able to move with the times, which is something I think it has done in recent times. So long as there is plenty of variety of styles within the scene it won't go stale again, and should make for a stronger and healthier scene. To be honest, I don't want to see hardcore pinned down to one specific sound or style, because I believe that this is what has caused so much damage in the past. Hardcore is about so much more than stabs, pianos and girly vocals, and if we can keep it fresh, different and varied, it will be here for a very long time. Less rip-off's and more original material is the only answer.

Q: Favourite record label?
A: Yeah, FD Recordings is the dogs bollox!! LOL. To be honest, I don't really have a favourite label at the moment. I like a variety of different styles, but prefer anything with a hard and dark edge to it and something just that little bit uplifting too. I don't really care what label it's on. If I like it, I like it, if I don't, I don't.

Q: Favorite DJ (other than yourself)?
A: Again, I don't really have any one single favourite DJ because I like several for different reasons. People I really admire and respect include Sharkey, Brisk, Kevin Energy, Kaos, Clarkee and Marc Smith, who I would probably single out as the guys I would go out of my way to catch at a party.

Q: Best / favourite hardcore moment?
A: I've been lucky enough to have lots of good times in this scene over the last 6 years, but my favourite would probably be my first booking at a big hardcore party, which was Moondance at Bagley's, London in 1998. I guess if it weren't for that, I would not be doing what I'm doing now. Also FD's first birthday party was quite a moment too, as we had so many problems leading up to the event, yet it was the best party we have ever done. It was so satisfying to stick two fingers up at everyone who claimed hardcore was dead.

Q: Worst hardcore moment?
A: I was MC'ing at a well-known event in Manchester last year, and saw a commotion going on in front of the stage. We had to stop the music as someone had collapsed on the dance floor and seemed to be unconscious. He was taken away in an ambulance and I found out the next day that the guy had died. I guess this puts things in to perspective.

Q: What you do in your spare time?
A: I don't really get much spare time, as I'm involved in so many different projects at the moment, so most of it is taken up in the studio, or chilling out at home or with my lady!!

Q: You have a web site?
A: My web address is http://www.future-dance.co.uk which is the home site for myself, DJ Kaos and all things FD related!! We are just about to start a rebuild on the site, making it more interactive and adding lots of new features, such as online mix's and monthly record reviews. Check it out!!

Q: You have a public contact email address?
A: Yes, people can contact me at ethos@future-dance.co.uk for any questions or info and I'll be happy to help!!

Q: What's your message to all the hardcore punters all over the world?
A: My message is to keep an open mind, enjoy your music, come to my parties and buy my records!! LOL. Seriously though, hardcore music is all about having a good time, so don't get bogged down by politics, don't waste your time moaning about the negatives, respect other people and enjoy whatever YOU like. Can't say fairer than that, can I?!!
