Slipmatt - Breakin Free is awesome. Good one Elation. It's fast though, I thought it was happy hardcore with old skool flavor though. Maybe our definitions of old skool differ though.

Elation |
well Slipmatt - Breakin free is from 1994, so its a bit past old skool, but it has no kik drum in it. just PHATT rollin bass, so it still sounds like old skool. nice.

IN MY EYES..
oldskool is anything from 80's right though to 96-97.. Mind you most of the trax i like and listen 2 are from 92-96.
What do you think?
|
Elation |
old skool for me refers to 88-93. when there was no split between jungle or hardcore. it was just dance music to make you move. after the splitting started happening, then its just old hardcore. old skool to me was when it was all ONE and there were no classifications like there are now. if you look at a time line, after 92/93 you started getting new styles. then 95/96 it was changing again. by 99/00 youre getting into a whole new era of HHC.
so i would have to say, even though Breakin Free is a slammin old skool track. it missed the time line to be an actual old skool track.
Adamthe 1...its almost like youre saying Old Skool is anything thats from the past. suff from 97 is way too different from the 92 stuff, so i wouldnt put it in the Old Skool catagory.

Thank you all who posted your favorites. I thought I knew a lot about oldskool until I read this. Then I downloaded almost all the songs listed and now have a private history folder. I think that this will make me a better dj as I now have stronger roots.

If you consider that the hardcore scene has been rather ****ed by too many tracks trying to be or copy anthems over the years, i think that oldskool should be remebered for its diversity. Obviously there are stand out tracks but Oldskool is always better remembered for the vibe rather than particular tunes. I feel this sort of idea is completely lacking in todays electronic music.
Its an irony as everybody is looking to make the next big thing tune wise and thus not exeperimenting, but those who are experimenting usually come up with the next big thing. Oldskool was all about pushing all new ideas and I think that we need to get back to that somehow at least in the hardcore scene.
Anyways this is a rather big rant for something that just asked for my fave oldskool tunes!
Plz refer to my previous post for my faves!

I think we're rediscovering that diversity now in hardcore.....i think its a shame it has to b slpit into so many catergories liek it never used to b...ie sum1 makes a hardcore trak wiv a trancey elemt ...bang itz Freeform...sum1 makes a break beat hardcore trak, its new skool breaks, its all hardcore and we shud b able 2 mash it up however we like....Then hardcore was brand new so it wa smore diverse but ti think nwo with the rise of hardcore agen alot of new stuff will b experimented wiv agen wevva it b good/bad...each artist ha sthere own styles look @ Hixxy for a prime example..
