I'm starting to save up some money and am thinking of sinking it into some DJ/mixing equipment, to try my hand at it. I'm totally clueless, of course, but I want to learn, so does anyone have some pointers for what kind of beginning equipment to get and some resources I could look up for it? Thanks.

I assume you are wanting to mix happy hardcore, really the most important thing is the records, never cut yourself short on buying records, the more you have the more flexible DJ you are. You can always upgrade equipment but it is really hard to buy older vinyl once it is released.
As for equipment it depends of how much you are willing to spend. I recommend SL1200's for sure, they also retain value extreamly well and never break (never). Mixer's anything is okay really, some are better than other's but for starters you can take anything. Get yourself a good pair of headphones so you can hear what you are doing. Needles, anything should be okay as long as it supports SL1200's (ask the shop assistant). Go to a few parties and go up near the DJ booth and have a look what he (or she) is doing compaired to the sound. Once you know the tracks that the DJ is playing you will be able to understand how they are mixing.

Here's my current setup
2 1200 MK2s
Numark 2000x
Sony v600 headphones
I spin house and happy hardcore, and this setup is great for both. I started on some cheaper equipment and bought better gear once I got more serious (ie: spun out at parties).

Oh yea cartridge/needles!
Discmasters are cheap, sound good and track well, although Ortofon's are quite a bit better at both (quite spendier though :))

anyone out there into producing their own happy hardcore??? i have been doing it for the last few years now with a boss drum machine/ midi keyboard/vaz modular software/cubase/cooledit pro/fruityloops......i am very interested to hear what other people use so i can expand my sounds

Off topic: How about the Vestax PMC 170 A. Is that a good mixer for (happy) hardcore? My current high expensive mixer :) is only good for trance/house. And it doesn't have a crossfader so I can't make some nice crossovers. And what for mixers are the pro's using?

I have that exact mixer myself, when I was buying it I went into the shop with a few happy hardcore tunes and made the guy behind the desk plug in 2-3 different mixers with the same records, IMO I found the Vestax to have the best and clearest sound. It also have balanced outputs which is good of you ever need to use it in a large club or something.

Thnx silver. With balacend outputs you're meaning those XLR outputs right? I have them also on my current mixer but my amp doesn't support them.

Yep exactly, normally home equipment or DJ equipment does not has them but most large clubs do, so this mixer is good for both cases.

i've been producing for almost 2 years now (based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). My styles usually are Happy hardcore, trancecore, hard acid, hard house .... Got a nice bedroom studio going, and finally getting a sound quality that i'm happy with.

Yah .. it's a nice set of gear ... but there's always something i want .... ain't it always like that :P
And yes .. it does take a bit of cash ... $10,000 - $12,000 CDN is about what' i've put into the studio already .. (most of it over a year and a bit).
It's always best to slowly build it up too. Get a new peice of kit, learn it well, incorporate it into yer setup, then grab something else new. It's nice to have a good pile of gear .. but one peice of good hardware can really do an incredable amount.
If ya can, do a rental for a couple months to make sure what you get is really going to work for you (i've known too many people that spend all their available cash to get say a Roland MC505 or somthing the same, and then realize it's really sooo not what they want...in a matter of a month. *sigh*

If you are tight on cash and need tables for your home, get the Stanton STR-8 tables, which truly look and feel like the SL1200s and not some crap knock-offs. It comes with the 500 AL-II cartridge too which is a great deal..
For a mixer I chose the Stanton SK-5 which is also a sweet mixer, with RCA and 1/4" balanced outs, perfect for recording your mixes to DAT or CD. It's quiet too and only costs $149. It's a popular mixer. It's doesn't have the bells and whistles like kill switches, but who cares. The components that it does have are totally rock solid! That's the most important..

I've been useing those Stanton Str-8 tables and i think the same mixer as well..... and i find them to be great!!! i wanna move into 1200's soon but for starting out.... i think i droped about 900$ canadian for the tables, carts, mixer , and neelds... was a plug into amp and go deal... if ya can get something like that for home practice... it will prolly do you great... and as mholloway said..... they are great for recording as well :D
