Hi there peeps,

Long time no talk, havnt been on here for well over a year. i tink. lol

well anyway....

I have a tape in my house and its called Afterdark II, the DJ is Scott, and the 2 MC's are Techno T and G-Force. The tape is from '99

Now i have done a bit of research and found out that originally Afterdark was called Judgement Day, then changed to Afterdark. Finnally it is now called Hangar 13!

Anyway bak to the question...

There is a song on this tape, and i love it too bits. And i want to know the name of it.This i where you guys (and gals) come in!

I have been told by one of my mates that he thinks the name of the song is Essence, and i was just wondering if anybody had heard of that song??

I will post the lyrics soon so just see if you know that song and ill get back too you all

there was 2 different after dark clubs both since closed. the judgement day took over the after dark1 for a few parties but they werent run by the same promoter. bassy g ran the judgement day. hangar 13 is run by dj scott. its run from a different place than the after darks were. after dark was in south sheilds, hangar 13 is in sunderland.

would b a help if u can post the lyrics, im not good at remembering song names.. :)

Dj Scott is a god. I'd never heard of him until a scotland vs england in glasgow coupla year back and the newcastle dj's, mc's blew me away- especially scott. Since then i've collected loadsa spanish as well as happy hardcore and listened to all the audio of his career. I personally think because the north east scene's so localised that he's never got the real recognition he deserved.

loadsa ppl say that judgement day chnaged to the afterdark (1) when technically it didn't, the attention just shifted form judgemtn day to afterdark. That closed down and then afterdark 2 was started. DJ scott was heavily involved in the afterdark (2) and introduced makina to the north east (well he made it big if u no wot i mean). Afterdark2 closed then in 200 scott opened up hanger 13 and his own record shop, makina.
Theres also an old tale that sed the colloseum turned into the afterdark then that turned into the new monkey but that is ********. Apparently, the BLUE monkey (in early 90's) turned into colloseum which then turned to the new monkey (even tho that they were in different places).

Can any1 with sufficient knowledge of the north east scene (i.e. the past 10/12 years) clear this up as iv only been in the scene about 4 years.

I will set the record right on the northeast rave scene.

1st was the blue monkey (sunderland) 1990/1991 it was classed as a rave club but really if you call songs like ride like the wind and other chart stuff at the time rave well thats what it was then.This club got closed down at the end of 1992??? due to drugs and a death by stabbing and this club was own by none of the below partys.

2nd was the afterdark 1 in 1992 (sunderland) this club closed in 1994/1995??? and moved to the blue monkey venue which on its first night got raided and shut and the next week it got burnt down.

3rd the same owners of the afterdark 1 moved to (stockton) and opened the coliseum under a few names until they decided to name it the coliseum.

4th came the judgement day event (newcastle) which bassy-g and mikey-b started.

5th in 1997 the same owners from the coliseum opened the afterdark 2 in (south shields) and later that year the coliseum closed due to drugs.

So that left the afterdark 2 and the judgement day and bassy-g now owned judgement day both clubs closed in 1999.

5th came the new monkey in the end of 1999 (sunderland) and is still open today.

6th i left the new monkey and started the hangar 13 event in 2000 (sunderland) and is still open today.

Thats around the full story of the clubs and events you all have talked about well just about.

Event: Rezerection (Newcastle/Scotland) 1990-1997

The Rez was the daddy of them all. A major event. Started in a small club in Newcastle, then the rave scene exploded, and it moved to the legendary large capacity (2000 people) Mayfair nightclub in Newcastle, which had a history of being a ballroom, then rock venue, hosting gigs from rock giants Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, and Nirvana. The Mayfair closed in 1999. It was a massive venue underneath "The Gate" in Newcastle city centre. Now it's probably The Gates underground car park. Rez at the Mayfair had The Prodigy, Carl Cox, Dream Frequency, Mickey Finn, Grooverider and all the big names of the time. Rez then expanded even bigger and moved to the Royal Highland Centre in Scotland, which was a gigantic conference centre with around 5000 capacity. They also had a few festivals with outdoor tents/arenas. Rez Event 3 was non-stop 20 hours long with a flyer so big it would take you 10 minutes to read all the names, and longer to figure out all the different sub-genres being played. Rez Event 2 & 3 were legendary for their diverse line ups with DJs from all around the world, and one of most varied music selections in Europe. You couldn't predict the line ups or the themes for the next event. With the raves "darn sarf" you knew the entire line up before the flyer was released.

In size and prestige Rez was on par with Helter Skelter and Dreamscape during the 90s hardcore scene. Only Fantazia can best them down to the impact Fantazia had on the UK rave scene in the early stages.

1st club Blue Monkey (Sunderland) 1990/1991-1992(?)

It tells the story of how a normal "Ritzy" nightclub changed its music policy from pop music to the new sounds of "rave", and early 90's dance music. And in such a short space of time igniting the explosion of rave culture in the North East. Drug gangs, dodgy dealings, arson attempts, police raids and much more. It ends with the New Monkey and the Makina revolution. Some great interviews with legends of the scene telling their side of the story, and lots of amazing footage from both clubs. It's a must watch!
2nd all-nighter club After Dark 1 (Sunderland) 1992-1994)
Music policy a mixture of Italian House, Hardcore, House and random stuff. DJs and MCs Full Effect, Jimmy G-Force, Jason Bushby, Adrian Street, Daz Attack etc used to play here. Carl Cox even played there once, and rumours are he didn't get paid (Somebody involved denied this but it's another fable to chuck on the pile). When closed, they moved to the Colloseum.

A club we'd been to once before when it was called the Eclipse,The After Dark Sunderland was launched re-branded in late '92.
Terrorize and Bass Value were supposed to PA,the flyer looked really good.The Monkey had been raided and the After Dark was making its move.
I remember the last time we were in there,there were about 20 or 30 people inside,a strange place with some very unique characters.that was probaly enhanced due to the fact we were on the way down after taking all our gear in the Monkey before deciding to head over to the Eclipse when the Monkey closed at 2am.
The flyer looked good and it was worth a visit.
As we pulled up outside in my mates Mk3 Escort it was obvious there was going to be alot more than 20 of 30 people in there.
We struggled to get parked near the club, we parked the car up a kerb jammed between a load of other cars full of Ravers desparate to get inside.Before we got to the door we already had a casulaty,my mate who previously had a bad turn on the Snowballs a few weeks prior was going nowhere.He was the driver of the car and while totally normal insisted on us locking the doors on his car and then passing the keys back to him through the sunroof.
You could hear the Bass pumping through the walls from the sound system inside,there was already a buzz of excitement making your way to the doors.
Once inside,immediately to the right was a hatch to pay the entrance fee,sure it was ?10. Then walking forward into the main room,it was ram packed,boiling hot and the music was deafening,this was going to be a good one.
What a difference,the After Dark was a completely different set up to The Blue Monkey.Very low ceilings,incredibly dark,one state of the art laser at the front and the loudest sound system you'd ever heard.Seating was minmal,a couple of pillars keeping up the strucure with some room to sit around the base of them, then a make shift seating area at the very rear of the club.
Where as the Blue Monkey was very bright,had levels to it and a very friendly and happy feeling to it .It felt very open and big giving a particular vibe due to it being an old picture hall this place basically was one long large room with a stage at the front that you could barely make out.The After Dark was still friendly but it was more hardcore and underground for the serious Raver.
You were still greeted with the usual,where you from?What you had?and just the I'm ****ing wrecked me ha ha ha.Everybody was there just to have a good time and for the love of the music.
What a night,luckily I'd managed to avoid the Snowballs again.One of my mates wasn't so lucky,he had a snowball and a Flatliner,he never moved all night,on the plus side there was always a seat next to him as everybody avoided him like the plague.His long hair drenched in sweat and his eyes stuck in the back of his head.
Where as the Monkey had the barrier with the unique dancers on it that took you to that next level with there unique styles and movemnts that set the club apart from any other The After Dark had Mc G Force,veteran from the first Raves and the Galactica,this man had Mc'd with the Worlds number 1 Dj Joey Beltram and was well known in the scene.
The Blue Monkey and some of the earlier clubs did have Mc's but to be fair you rarely noticed them too much.Obviously we had tapes but there's a big difference between a tape and live especially when your off it.
The After Dark was different,G Force Screaming out Dj Excel and Mc G Force the North's finest duo,Sounds so good,the sound of the Ecstacy,rush coming on to the heart attack and Ecstacy crew time to come alive.Due to your enhanced senses you seemed to pick up certain trigger words especially anything to do with the word Ecstacy.
It was unreal it made you feel as if the music was being made for you and everybody in that club at that time.His passion was infectious and it was sending everybody crazy.
Everybody had heard that Beltram tape when he dropped Mayday by Westam alongside Mc G Force,well Excel dropped it and G Force comes in with the same lyrics as the tape,the place went absolutely bizerk it was incredible.
The state of the art laser at the front coupled with the low ceiling and smoke added massively to the atmosphere,putting you into a trance as you looked down what seemed to be a long endless tunnel.The music pumping out with lyrics like Never felt so good,take me to the top and can't stop this feeling then there was G Force stood at the front shouting Ecstacy crew this one's for you.Unbelievable,I never left the dancedloor all night.Throwing out my newly learned dance moves this was amazing.The difference with all nighters starts around 3/4am,by this time your deep into the world they call Ecstacy,the buzz getting darker and more intense Mc Rhyme comes on,his own completely unique style,to the beat y'all,tic tock ,tic took with that noise he used to make,putting rhymes together like I'd never heard before.One amazing tune After another before we know it,its time to go.
We left the club around 7am,just before it gets light.God knows if Terrorize or bass Value had been on,i didnt care it was one of the best Raves i'd been too.
You often found back then some people never turned up but wow that was amazing that was unreal. Dj Excel,Mc G force ringing in our ears still hearing him shouting it for hours later along with constant ringing in your ears from the sound system."

3rd all-nighter club The Venue in Spennymoor, 1992(?)-1995

Based in an old Bingo Hall/Cinema. An all-nighter that played uplifting Italian House, and a mixture of hardcore/rave. A weird mix especially at the time when breakbeat was popular down south along with the start of jungle and the darker sound, up in Scotland and Holland things were getting harder and BPMs were rising. By 1995 hardcore was hard and fast, but the Venue kept the BPM lower, mostly sticking with Italo House as the core.

Most of these North East clubs had their own style of music, did their own thing, having some influence from the hardcore scene, but creating their own identitity with the music choices and MCing style. They were tied to the rave scene, but if somebody coming from Fantazia or Helter Skelter walked into the Venue, Colo, After Dark 2 or even the New Monkey they would be confused as to what they were hearing.

I think The Venue was raided once by the police(?), and one night in 1995 there was a fire, by the morning it was ashes. Some say it was an insurance job, but thats just another fable to chuck on the fire (there are lots of fires in these stories). If you look on google maps at Cheapside Spennymoor right next to Spennymoor library, it's a fenced off wasteland with weeds growing on the rubble. Nobody has built on it since they demolished the building decades ago, who knows who owns that land but its been untouched ever since. Well known North East DJs and MCs like DJ Charlie, Selector C, Jimmy G-Force, Techno T, MC Stompin, Jason Bushby and Adrian Street played at "The Venue".

Up the main street in Spennymoor was the Top Hat nightclub which emptied around 1am. It played a similar style, the same DJs/MCs. When the Top Hat was finished at 1am The Venue was just warming up. Everybody piled out of the Top Hat, walked down the street to party in the Venue until sun up. I can just imagine the Djs carrying their heavy record boxes down to the venue to play their sets, nowadays you put a USB in your pocket with a 1000 songs on.

The Top Hat changed names a few times, music policies, and had a few local bounce events in the 2000s when it was called The Cube. It was never the same as the early days when rave fever took over. Alough It did improve in the 2000s with proper DJs putting on some non-commercial tunage the young 'uns seemd to love.

The Quinns Inn opposite still has a few things on keeping the Spenny scene alive. Quinns is literally the Rave HQ of Spenny now.

Event: Judgement Day 1993(?)-1999 (Newcastle)

I loved Judgemt Day! Probably my favorite of anything Ive been to then or since, not much compares with that atmosphere. Judgement Day was more tied to the UK Hardcore scene than the others. An event type rave, well known around the country with people travelling from all over the UK, and Ireland to attend. The legendary DJ/producer Bass Generator ran this. I think Mikey B (Dream Frequency MC, DJ at Fantazia-Big Bang) came along later. Bassy G had a record shop in Newcastle and ran the "Bass Generator records" label which released some classic hardcore tracks. Mikey B owned a record shop in Durham called Concepts. Mikey B and his promo company "Dance Concept" disapeared later and Bassy G ran the show from then on. Somebody please get Bassy G to talk about Mikey-B, and the Judgement day shows/shenagins, I bet there's some juicy back stage stories to tell.
Judgment Day started in Whitley Bay at the small 200 capacity Global Village club. In 1994 they moved to Newcastle University Student Uni, which held around 1000 plus, until it was ended in 1999 on UK Hardcores deathbed. In 1997 & 1998 they put on shows at Rezerections stomping ground at The 5000 capacity, Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh.
Judgement Day was an event rather than a club. It ran once a month, and sometimes toured around, but its home was the Newcastle Uni. Some ealier events at the uni were on a Thursday night 6pm till 1pm (I remember getting the bus to college the next day, knackered but still buzzin from the atmosphere), which didn't hinder the ravers as it was still packed with lunatics bouncing around not caring about work the next day. It moved to a Saturday night later on. Again, very diverse line ups, JD showcased the best, most famous hardcore DJs/PAs from around the world, and had a harder edge compared to raves down south, where a more vocal sound, sometimes cheesy happycore was beginning to take over in the mid 90's. They say the further North you get the harder the sound got, and for Judgement Day, the Rez, Doncaster Warehouse Scottish clubs like Fubar, and Nosebleed etc that saying was true.

JD had a Gabber room where Loftgroover, Smurf, DJ Producer etc used to bang out 200+BPM gabba, speedcore, and that weird guitar heavy stuff that sounded like death metal.

The main room got pretty hard when Lenny Dee or the Dutch guys played. Although, in the main room they still had "happycore" DJs coming to play from down south, so it was a varied selection of music, Brisk and SY were the biggest hits from the South.

Bassy G didnt let it get too cheesy as there is another fable: On one night a DJ played DJ Magical-Rush Hour, which was a pretty saccharine song(which I love). I heard that Bassy G came over, took the record off the turntable, smashed it on the floor unimpressed by the cheesy happycore song, and telt them to not play that sh1te anymore. Who knows if this is trur or not, I didnt see it and I always had my eyes glued to the DJ box. Although I could have been in the Gabba room sticking my head in a speaker.
Around '97 the Colosseum DJs and MCs started getting more gigs in favour of a flyer full of expensive big name DJs, maybe because the hardcore scene was dying, less people coming, less money to fly in DJs from all over the world, so they got the local boys in to smash the place up, which they did. You can't grumble when Daz Attack, G-Force is on stage with Selector C, NRG spinning the wheels of steel.
Sadly there is no footage of Judgement Days epic nights. At the time nobody thought to film everything, we just did it, the night ended and we all expected it to be still there next weekend so we could do it again. Although, I did see a video camera there one night and, I know somebody does or did have video tapes from the main stage at Judgement Day. But who knows where that footage has gone to. Probably in a dusty box hidden up in somebodies attic mixed in with a bunch of old VHS tapes, Robocop Die Hard, and taped off the TV episodes of Only Fools and Horses.

Event: Unity (Newcastle) 1995-1996

Unity had two big events at the Mayfair Newcastle in 95. On the second event somebody died, and that was the last rave at the Mayfair. Unity had another event elsewhere in Newcastle in 1996 (I was there but I cant remember which club, I think it was on the World Headquarters), but the turnout was poor, especially compared to JD which was absolutely ram jammed. I think this was the last time I saw Mikey-B at an event and he moved on.

4th All-nighter club Colosseum (Stockton) 1994-1997

It was an old cinema, which was turned into the Fiesta club in the '70s for the oldies to watch Neil Diamond and Tom Jones sing. The Fiesta club refurbishment gave the venue its unique layout, and "mediteranian village" feel. It was repurposed as the all night drug rave in 1994. The same owners of the After Dark 1 (Gary and Jimmy Robb) moved to Stockton.
Jason Bushby wrote this on the Coloseum Facebook page about the naming of the club. "Some rave history... before the "Colosseum" the club had various names. The Robbs were obsessed with the Blue Monkey and came up with Monkey Magic. It then changed to Club Fiesta / Blue Monkey and finally in April 1995 we changed it to The Colosseum."
The venue was pretty big, with balconies, different levels at the back, multiple latyers, chill out rooms, little nooks and crannies you could hide out in.

It had a towering sound system, massive, if you got on the sound system and fell you'd probably break your neck. I sat on and danced on the skyscraper of speakers many times, and was never told to get down once. The DJs/MCs just let you do what you wanted unless it wasn't too radgey. You could get on stage by a side door, stand at the side of the stage and watch the MCs as long as you didnt bother them.

And somebody please tell me about that dingy, dark, side passage to the stage. There was a door just beofe you stepped onto the stage. In that door was pitch black darkness, I assume a storage room where stuff used to get dumped, but if you went in the door and looked up there was square hole in the ceiling which lead to the DJ box on the 2nd floor. Why was there a hole in the ceiling?

The Colo also had a proper laser machine which moved to the After Dark 2 when the Colloseum closed. All the DJs/MCs from the previous clubs moved over like DJ NRG, Full Effect, Daz Attack, Stompin, Techno T, Selector C, Jimmy G-Force, DJ Charlie etc. They had big name DJs/PAs on all the time like Ultra Sonic, Mark Smith, Ultimate Buzz, Q-Tex, Paul Elstak. Music was another weird mix of UK hardcore, Scottish & Dutch bouncy techno, Italian & Spanish rave, trancey stuff from Europe all played at a fast BPM. They used to tinker with the 1210's to speed them up, take off the platter, to reveal a little screw, turn the screw which raises or lowers the BPM faster than default.

Again, it was classed as a rave, but it had its own style of music separate from the big raves like Helter Skelter, Rezerection. One DJ (NRG?) even used to play Deeply Dippy by Right Said Fred, and mixed a beat on top of it. Genius!

I hit the right age for the Coloseum and must gone every two weeks until it ended. Even when I lost my driving license I used to bus from Bishop Auckland. After we were kicked out on Sunday morning sit in Stockton Market place until 10am when the Sunday service bus came along, winter was harsh freezing my nuts off at 7:30am with hours to go until the bus came and nothing open.

On the final night. Yes I was one of the last people on the danceloor, with a few other nutters shouting for one more for every song at the end. I was right there on the last ever song.

It was raided in 1996, which was all over the North East news. They probably had loads of hassle from the council, and police, especially when they were members only clubs, and the majority of these clubs didn't have an alcohol licence, so the council cannot collect cash money from them. The posse at the Colosseum even had trouble from drug gangs down South wanting to take over and sell drugs there. There's a story I read on a forum somewhere, where one of the DJs/MCs tells the tale of this London(?) gang making threats and coming up from "darn sarf" to smash the place up. As far as I remember the DJ/MC said they had baseball bats hidden, they called all their buds in, and they were crapping themselves waiting for this gang to appear with guns to start a gang war in a packed club. In the end, nobody turned up.

Another myth was them turning off the taps in the toilet to stop bottle refils. I can say this never happened, a complete myth. The toilets always had fresh running water. I can't say the cubicles were fresh though, and I always wondered who would be going in with a mop at the end of the night. Did you take turns, Jimmy G-Force on toilet duty one week, then Full Effect the next?

The music was spot on, diiferent, unique. Some classic tunes ignored by the main rave scene were championed by the Colo DJs.

The Colly closed in 1997, and now it's a called "Destiny Church".

5th All-nighter club After Dark 2 (South Shields) 1996-2001

In 1996 the crew from the Colosseum opened the After Dark and ran it on Fridays and Colly on the Saturdays. Colly shut down, then After Dark 2 moved to Saturdays and received the laser machine. Again, this one probably closed after they were chased out by the council. (The council needrd an enemy and you were it) The same DJs and MCs moved over, with a few new editions. I think that MC Jet and Hype started here. Music is the same weird mix of being in the hardcore scene but having its own style of UK Hardcore, Scottish Bouncy Techno, European stuff, Italian, Spanish, German trance everything goes, UK trancecore tunes which were ignored by the rest of the hardcore scene but adopted here and at the Colly.

One DJ used to play a heavily sped up Venga Boys-Up & Down so literally anything went if the style fit, and the style was "bouncy". As far as I know, the first seeds for a complete North East Makina take over were being sown at the After Dark 2.

I went to After Dark 2 a lot as well, although not my fave, there have been some great nights. Like when there was free entry nights in 97(?) and the club was rammed. The After Dark 2 crowd also loved their PAs. The stage was tiny so not much could be done, but the people in the front row were up for anything. Proper mentalists. I danced for a band at the time and those After Dark 2 kids loved us, absolutely loved us like it was the first time they ever saw a PA. Whenever we came back for another gig they loved us. Some places people will just stand/dance and watch as they've seen it all before. Not the After Dark 2 i'll give it that, they went bonkers for it.

It shut down in 2001 and the downstairs part is now "Ahmed's International Foodstore".

6th All-nighter club New Monkey 1999-2006

Never went, only know little bits about it. New Monkey closed in 2006, again the same old story of the council chasing out something they dont understand. The same somethng that wiped out football hooolganism within a couple of years.....wiped it out!! Not the police, not the government, but the RAVES, and it probably halved the number people in A&E on weekend. But boomers will be boomers, it's their job to not understand. It just goes to show though, give the kids something to do and they will flourish, take everything away and they wll go mental climbing up the walls.

Oasis (Bishop Auckland) 1998-2000s

Zippy & Trixy used to run under 18 UK hardcore and bounce nights at small pub Laceys, as far as I know they were just kids who manged to put a show on for them and their mates, and it gradualy got bigger and bigger. They moved to the Reds/Lennon's nightclub. Reds also used to be a soft rave nightclub around 1995 playing all the cheesy stuff like Scooter and QFX.

One time I did walk into one of the Oasis nights and heard either Zippy or Trixy scratch. So good, sounded amazing! I'm sure this crowd, before Oasis started got hold one of my 3 deck mixing tapes back in the day (Did any of you or your posse go to ITEC in Aycliffe and given a mix tape, that tape was me, I heard about this tape going around Bishop years after, this magical tape of a phantom DJ mixing and scratching on 3 decks)

There's still a bounce scene in Bishop where they have outdoor events at the Bishop Rugby club field and other stuff in pubs where John Fazak and others have a scene going. (I'm a bit hazy on the finer details).
