It's about time I had an upgrade I think. Cubase seems a lot more hungry than FL and I'm starting to get annoyed. :P
The system is used for Cubase, FL and a bit of gaming. I currently have a Core2Duo 3.2GHz, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM and an 8800GTS graphics card. This is what I'm looking at next -
Case
COOLERMASTER ELITE 310 BLUE CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel Corei7-2600 Quad Core (3.40GHz, 8MB Cache) + HD Graphics
Motherboard
ASUS P8P67 (NEW REV 3.0): USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, CrossFireX
Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)
Graphics Card
1GB AMD RADEON HD6870 - 2 DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
640GB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD6402AAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
2nd Hard Disk
640GB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD6402AAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
RAID
RAID 1 (MIRRORED VOLUME - 2 x same size & model HDD / SSD) (9)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER R/RW/RAM
Memory Card Reader
INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT
Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W TX SERIES (TX650) 80+ ULTRA QUIET PSU (72)
Processor Cooling
SUPER QUIET 22dBA TRIPLE COPPER HEATPIPE CPU COOLER (19)
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Facilities
ONBOARD 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT - AS STANDARD ON ALL PCs
USB Options
6 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL (MIN 2 FRONT PORTS) AS STANDARD
Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence (79)
Total: 966
I'm not sure if I'm just wasting money on the 2 HD Raid setup. I've never had a drive fail on me before but I guess it has got to happen to me sometime.
Also concerned about the Graphics Card, is this one a good choice? I'm always out of touch with them, they seem to change so fast. I've only got a 19" standard monitor so games wont be run on super high res' and I'm not fussed about things being on max settings... Just want to be able to run things smoothly and be a bit future proof. I really am on the edge of my budget though so can't spend much more.

atleast you got a proper motherboard compared to me :P
mine had the faulty cougar point chipset, so my computer randomly locked (crashed). And after installing the new motherboard (rev 3), i ****ed up the memory settings so many times that my windows in the end didnt want to boot anymore :(

Ach, ****er man. That has got to be pretty gutted! You manage to get it up and running in the end or did you have to scrap it?

what am I running on? :)
Well I had to change my memory latency(?) to 1066Mhz and reinstall Windows. So far not a single BSOD

To address your issues:
Graphics Card: You could play Crysis 2 on great settings, you have nothing to fear with that beast. Only problem is it is Radeon, meaning, if you're going to use Linux you'll have a little more fuss with getting a driver properly installed as ATI's drivers aren't open sourced like NVIDIA.
HDD: I always recommend doing RAID for safety, and you can also do it for performance as well, so it's really a good buy if you're worried. Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't!
Case: I always recommend getting a case with a fan in the front, a side vent, and of course the vent in the back. It just helps improve air circulation, and never keep your case locked up somewhere have it in the open. Your case isn't bad though if you don't expect to do heavy processing and need to make sure your card and CPU are cool, side vent does a lot.
RAM: Is a little overkill IMO, you should be set at 4-6GB I don't think you need 8GB for just music producing, but I might be wrong because I'm not sure how intensive it is. Does it require rendering on the equivocation of video rendering? If so, and you're doing it a lot, 8GB would be good but you could definitely cut 2GB out and save some cash.
Everything else looks good man, you should get it. The only thing I'm not sure about is the sound card because I've never bought a sound card, I took a cheap route in recording from the mixer with an external.

Ah well at least you got it going at last. :P I thought you might have been on an old machine or a laptop or something.

Thanks mate, some handy advice there! I may have to take another look at the case I think. I seem to be maxing out my memory on Cubase and I have 4 gig at the mo so it must hog it somewhere. Thought I may as well get a good whack over so I'm not hitting near it any time soon.
The soundcard can be ignored actually! That's just the one that comes with the machine as standard but I have my own Echo Mia Midi to put in. Fairly old bit of kit now but it's perfect for my needs so no point in changing that at the moment.

If you can afford it I strongly recommend getting a Solid State Drive.

They won't be cheap for another couple years.. I really only recommend getting a small one and put your core files on their (OS, your most important programs, etc.) to help improve load times by a lot. Otherwise it's just not worth the price right now.

instead of 8 gb, loose 2 of them and get a SSD for main system drive. That's how mine is currently built. I've split a 90GB (not the ^1024), and split it into 60GB (actually 58.5GiB) and 25GiB. On the first partition I run Windows and Application, while on the 2nd I got important Applications and %appdata% stuff, so if C:\ gets focked, I dont lose much. That's why I didnt have a big problem reinstalled Windows again (well I did forget to re-route my documents folders so I lost the few things I managed to store there).
and isnt a 1TB HDD cheaper than 2 6?0GB HDD (I know 1TB is cheaper than 2 500GBs).
And unless you're going to run Crysis 2 or video editing on your computer, why the cooling systems? The one that follows the CPU is usually sufficient. I don't got any fancy cooling system. My case got 2 6(?)" fans on front and back, and I only use the things that followed with my g-card and CPU

You can check with recuva if the files are still there.
I've lately been playing less and less and XP is more then enough for me. Dont see any real reasons to upgrade my system. Even though its years old (haven't even crashed like ...ever. Some programs have crashed but never the OS). But i really want a more silent case. Been drooling on the Antec P183 case with the dedicated antec PSU. Though they would cost about 300e. So kinda iffy if i should get them or something more important...

I wouldn't. Nobody needs that RAM unless they're video rendering. You'd probably use about 6 of it effectively.

Completely agree about the casing. Air flow and cooling is one of the most important things. Anyone whose ever had a mid range laptop can attest to how debilitating overheating can be.
4-6GB will be fine for high quality audio rendering. It's nothing compared to video rendering. It takes significantly less time and resources. I have a good mate in video editing and 3d animation, and he's literally waited days for a render of about 10 seconds. It's heavy duty shit. He's going in for one of those BOXX set ups (which cost upwards of 5K and have RIDICULOUS specs like 128 gb of ram). I have the top range i5 Quad (doesn't have safe overclocking or hyper threading) and 4 gigs of ram and i render a full track (of 40-50 mixer channels loaded with fx and about a 6 minute run time) in about 1-2 minutes. Not even long enough to have a smoke. Rendering of a master has a similar eta. Those kinds of projects will also open in fl in about 10 seconds.
Don't know how you've been dealing with a core 2 duo. I have that on my lappy and all i find it useful in doing is jotting down riff ideas and such.
Trading in some goats, gaz?
*edit* make sure you're using windows 7 64 bit if you're using windows. 32 bit means you'll only be able to utilize ~3gb of ram.

That is just overkill. 6gb of ram would do me nicely. Don't think i've ever pushed over 4gb before.
